Job Description

First-Care thrives as a “customer service” culture. We define the “customer” differently than some in our industry in that we consider not only our patients our customers, but also the people who ask for our help in transporting the patient from one place to another. We offer superior customer service not just in the ambulance but also on the telephone, through scheduling software, and through strong partnerships with facilities and healthcare providers.

A Paramedic provides advanced emergency medical care and transportation to patients who access the EMS System. The Paramedic is a critical member of the EMS team and functions as the highest level provider on most calls, performing advanced assessments and life-saving interventions. In non-emergency situations, the Paramedic may provide transportation to patients who require an ambulance because of a medical condition. Teamwork at First-Care is pivotal to a strong EMS system.

What Are the Job Requirements?

To apply for the Paramedic position, you must have the following:

Pre-Employment Requirements:

  • Valid Driver’s License

  • Current Paramedic Certification

  • Current BLS CPR Certification

  • Current ACLS Certification

  • Pass Criminal Background Check

  • Pass Motor Vehicle Report

  • Additional Certification may be required as designations by protocols

Post-Employment Requirements:

  • Pass Annual Physical Requirements

  • Complete all NIMS-required education within 60 days of employment

  • Complete Ambulance Operations Training

  • Complete Stretcher and Stair Chair Training

  • Obtain EMS reciprocity with the State of Ohio and/or the State of Kentucky if required for operational assignment. Applicants must be willing and able to complete reciprocity processing after hire.

What Will I Do as a Paramedic?

A Paramedic provides advanced emergency medical care, assessment, stabilization, and transportation to patients accessing the EMS System. The Paramedic leads patient care, directs assisting EMTs, and performs treatments and procedures authorized under their scope of practice and medical protocols.

Job Duties:

  • Perform all advanced life support (ALS) skills and procedures as designated by the EMS Commission curriculum and First-Care medical protocols.

  • Lead patient assessment, formulate treatment plans, and provide ALS interventions including IV/IO access, cardiac monitoring, airway management, medication administration, and rhythm interpretation.

  • Direct and support EMTs and other crew members during emergent and non-emergent calls.

  • Respond to EMS calls as assigned by the communications center while observing First-Care policies on “out of chute” and “end of shift” times.

  • Follow all First-Care policies and procedures and demonstrate professionalism with patients, facilities, coworkers, and vendors.

  • Maintain strict compliance with confidentiality and HIPAA requirements regarding protected health information (PHI).

  • Report any real or potential breaches of privacy or policy violations to the Legal Department promptly.

  • Maintain courteous and professional conduct at all times. Sarcasm, hostility, or unprofessional attitudes are strictly prohibited.

  • Prior to each shift and in accordance with Ohio law, verify that all required ALS and BLS equipment is present, functional, and ready for use.

  • Maintain required continuing education as prescribed by the State EMS Agency and First-Care medical direction.

  • Operate assigned vehicles safely and in compliance with all laws and First-Care safety policies.

  • Complete all patient care reports and documentation accurately, completely, and before the end of shift.

  • Help maintain a clean and hazard-free work environment in vehicles and stations.

  • Report mechanical issues and complete required maintenance documentation per First-Care procedure.
